10K Halleys Comet Paste Brooch with Antique Box

$265.00
A true collector's piece-a Halleys Comet brooch dating to the Edwardian period.

The first Halley comet brooches were created around 1835 when the comet came into orbit. About every 75-79 years the comet returns. These particular piece dates closer to the Edwardian period when the comet showed around 1910. These brooches with gemstone heads and tails were created as a remembrance.

10K slight rose gold. It isn't marked (none of the ones I've ever had my hands on have been marked for karat content) but it has been tested in a few areas by touchstone and holds at 10K. The pin is a little darker and might not be gold. If you want to know for sure just reach out and I'll test it. The crown like head holds a paste stone cut like an old mine cut diamond. The paste measures approx. 7.7 mm wide. There are some chips to the girdle area but the prongs are all holding the paste securely. Everyone I've ever had for sale does have some roughness to the paste -these pieces much have been worn a lot and loved. The tail ends with an arrow point. The pin extends beyond the tail which makes me question whether it is a bit earlier than 1910. But I'll leave that mystery up to the new owner to solve.

1.25" width x 5/16" height

Come with an antique box that original held a pencil but it is a perfect fit.

Layaway available.
