An utterly charming Victorian spinning-top pendant dating to the late 19th century, circa 1880. The six-sided top is enamelled with romantic outcomes inspired by the French parlour game Effeuiller la Marguerite (“Pluck the Daisy,” better known as he loves me, he loves me not), though here expanded well beyond a simple yes or no.
The faces read: IL M’AIME, UN PEU, BEAUCOUP, PASSIONNEMENT, and PAS DU TOUT—translated respectively as “he loves me,” “a little,” “a lot,” “passionately,” and “not at all”—with the final face depicting an enamelled daisy missing a single petal.
The piece does have a hallmark on the top ring (I can't make it out). The material is silver and it retains its original screw-on bail, which may be removed to allow the top to spin and balance properly, just as intended. A delightful and unusually romantic novelty jewel from the height of the Victorian era.
1 1/4" length 3/8" wide.
Very good condition for an antique.
